Clinton cheating on his wife (again!)

Over the last few years, aides have winced at repeated tabloid reports about Clinton's episodic friendship and occasional dinners out with Belinda Stronach, a twice-divorced billionaire auto-parts heiress and member of the Canadian Parliament 20 years his junior, or at more recent high-end Hollywood dinner-party gossip that Clinton has been seen visiting with the actress Gina Gershon in California. There has been talk of a female friend in Chappaqua, a woman in a bar at a meeting of the Aspen Institute, and a public sighting of Clinton, Bing, and a ravishing entourage in a New York elevator that, a former Clinton aide told me, led a business leader who saw them to say: I don't know what the guy was doing, but it was so clear that it was just no good.

None of these wisps of smoke have produced a public fire. But four former Clinton aides told me that, about 18 months ago, one of the president's former assistants, who still advises him on political matters, had heard so many complaints about such reports from Clinton supporters around the country that he felt compelled to try to conduct what one of these aides called an "intervention," because, the aide believed, "Clinton was apparently seeing a lot of women on the road."

I agree this is irrelevant. There is a huge chance the Bill and Hillary will not be married much longer. Some say that this is a business arrangement but so what. They are great friends and obviously love each other period - even if they break up eventually. Just my two cents.

You know, I'm man enough to admit that there is some salacious gossip that would cause me to rethink my support for one candidate over another. And to have Gina Gershon's career revived in some way, be it ethical or not, I say, Clinton 08!

Seriously though, I feel less dirty clicking this than I did the latest "Michelle Obama Is Teh Devil Boinker" morning diary only because I totally dig Gina Gershon and always will. And that's why that Vanity Fair article makes me miss the Clintons I knew and loved. Because it's THOSE kind of stories that make right wingers CRINGE and CRY and make left wingers go "Well, isn't that nice. Gina Gershon getting work again."

If only it was her pacing around the RBC meeting and Ickies homeless begging change around Boulder CO then I'd be a happy man.

But I digress.

Bill Clinton isn't running for office.

Barack Obama is near certain to wrap up the nomination within days.

There is absolutely nothing to be gained - and nothing worth discussing on a blog dedicated to electing Democrats - from posting an artcle that's little more than rumor mongering.

Seriously - as an Obama supporter, I think this diary ought to be voluntarily deleted.  It just doesn't have any relevance.

"In fairness, it should be said that Clinton's entourage that weekend also included his daughter, Chelsea, and her boyfriend, Marc Mezvinsky, and no one who was there has adduced the slightest evidence that Clinton's behavior was anything other than proper. Nor, indeed, is there any proof of post-presidential sexual indiscretions on Clinton's part, despite a steady stream of tabloid speculation and Internet intimations that the Big Dog might be up to his old tricks. On any given visit to London, for example, Clinton is as apt to dine with Tony Blair or Kevin Spacey as with anyone who might raise an eyebrow."

Re: Clinton cheating on his wife (again!) (2.00 / 1)

Commenters, I appreciate you all defending Pres. Clinton now.  Where were you when so called "Democrats" were in the gutter parroting Republican talking points about the Clintons to tear them down for Obama? That's right, you were part of the mob.

You attacked anything not-Obama that moved. I cannot excuse the behavior, nor will I forget it. You and your 'Lord of the Flies' tribe, and the smear/attack campaign against good Democrats, is so far outside common decency, mutual respect, and good manners. As a life-long Democrat, I cannot express to you the utter shock, disbelief, and sadness I feel at having witnessed for the past 6 months people calling themselves Democrats behaving like mindless, flesh eating zombies at dkos and mydd. I expected this from Repubs, but not you.

I don't even no why I'm bothering to explain this to you. But you need to hear it. You need to understand why you will have trouble garnering support. You need to understand the simple premise that when you mistreat people they are likely not to befriend you when you call on them to be a friend.

by grlpatriot on Mon Jun 02, 2008 at 09:36:26 AM EST

You're going too far (2.00 / 3)

Perhaps this isn't the right place for the discussion - given that this diary has been universally denounced - but I think you're being unfair.

There WERE times when Bill Clinton crossed the line - let's remember, the Clinton campaign itself reconfigured Bill's role in this campaign after he went off reservation at times.

I voted for Bill Clinton twice (four times if you count primaries).   I joined MoveOn in the 90s and spent plenty of time defending Clinton.

But Bill Clinton was not perfect - and I'm not talking about his personal foibles - there were plenty of policy issues I had with him in the 90s.  There were plenty of institutional problems I had with the Clintons in 90s (the DLC being a big one).

The fact of the matter is that Bill Clintons two terms did not and do not give him license to take any and every shot he wanted at Obama.   What's more - when a campaign premises itself on a restoration of Bill Clinton's administration, I think it's perfectly legitimate to then also point out some of those negative aspects that many of us -- even back in the 90s - disagreed with.

I think that either here or at DK - the disavowal and attacks on the Clintons using GOP talking points (talking here about some of the more scurrilous, Scaife-based attacks) were rejected by a super-majority of Obama supporters.  You can go back to January, February, et al -- and search the hidden comments at DK -- and you'll see plenty of hidden comments that used Scaife-fueled talking points, many of them hidden by Obama backers (I know because I was among those handing out donuts).

No doubt, there were (and are) plenty of Obama supporters that crossed unacceptable lines, but they were certainly a minority -- just as the Clinton supporters that showed an appalling lack of class and decorum were and are a minority.

Re: You're going too far (none / 0)

I think the early theme certainly was -- remember, early in the campaign, Clinton's main theme was 'experience'.  Now sure - there was more to that 'experience' than just 1992-2000 - but it was most certainly a central part of it.   Bill Clinton also had a much more central role - recall that he even delivered the election night response/free airtime speech after one of the February contests was called (I forget which contest).

Recall, too, that one of Hillary's early stump speech applause lines - and the quotable moment from a later debate - was about it "taking a Clinton to clean up after a Bush".

Now do note - I am NOT saying that's the only thing Hillary Clinton had to offer nor am I saying that it was all there was to her campaign.

But I stand by my statement in thinking that that it was the cornerstone of the early Clinton campaign, at least up until March.

I think that's why there was a lot of grief - both fair and unfair - hurled at Bill.

I'm not saying it was an inherently bad thing to do so (use the Clinton administration as a campaign cornerstone) - most cycles, it probably works.  Especially under the current administration, I think the overwhelming majority of Americans would have quite readily taken to that message.

The paradigm simply changed.

who are you ranting at? (none / 0)

A Republican troll reprints an article from Vanity Fair.  That's all this is.  Some asshole trying to make Democrats mad at each other.

Remember, when people are competing intesely with each other, it's very easy to step in and stoke the worst emotions at key points to further divide them.  Don't take the bait.  The issues Hillary represents have nothing to do with the people who turn this into nothing but a celebrity showdown.

Senator Clinton, working with a majority in Congress and a Democratic president is going to do a hell of a lot more good for the country than any set up we've seen in a long time.  That really is something worth fighting for.

Really? (none / 0)

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what to think of your comment. I'm not looking to start a fight, but I see an inconsistency. You complain that Obama supporters either attacked Clinton using right-wing talking points, or at least did nothing to stop others who did. That's a valid complaint.

However, after a quick glance through your comment history, I notice that you don't hesitate to push the "Obama goes to a scary church" line, which is definitely the sort of thing I expect from Republicans. You even wrote a diary in February that strongly hinted at a Rezko/Muslim smear, under the guise of concern trolling.

Now, if Sen. Clinton had won the nomination, would I be at all justified in holding these things against you? Would I be justified in holding the countless Obama smears I've seen against Clinton? No. That's stupid.

Your vote is the most important tool you have. Don't let a bunch of morons on the internet or in the media affect how you use it. Vote based on issues, vote based on policy, and vote your conscience. If, at the end of the day, you still decide to vote for John McCain (or, at least, don't vote for Sen. Obama), then that's your choice. But the argument you put forward above is pretty pointless.

By the way, I'm a life-long Democrat, too, and I find the "Lord of the Flies" line and the zombie line a little offensive. But I'm willing to look beyond that, because I know we're on the same side, fighting for progressive ideals... right?

The diary with which you refer was a well sourced piece about possible ammo the Repubs would try to use against Obama. It is fact, not smear. Now, if this diary here about Pres. Just like Obama's church drama will negatively impact him and is far game to discuss.
