Another Clinton Delegate switches to Obama

LL's on the scene at the Kennedy Rec Center in Shaw, where Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans is holding his re-election kickoff party.

In the company of council Chairman Vincent C. Gray and Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, Evans announced minutes ago he's throwing his support behind Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Evans had been a longtime Hillary Clinton supporter, co-chairing her campaign in the District. Earlier this month, he'd been elected by local Democrats to serve as an at-large delegate pledged to Clinton.

Asked to explain his move, Evans cited "just the momentum that was going behind it." He says he left a message with the Clinton campaign about the decision but was not able to speak with the senator before making the announcement today.

"It's important for the city that we have a good relationship with the next president," Evans says.

Re: She never got any at-large pledged (2.00 / 1)

Evans was the sole Clinton add-on delegate.  He was elected as a pledged Clinton delegate.

Re: Another Clinton Delegate switches to Obama (none / 0)

<sigh> she was considered the presumptive winner supposedly (at least according to Obama supporters) when all these endorsements came from ingrained party members.  I have watched the whole turn of events and found it unusual to say the least.  And further I have NEVER been surprised by Obama's momentum - I don't believe he is as much the outsider ANYMORE as he has been painted. Instead I believe that party insiders are enjoying hurting Clinton for personal reasons and the voters are becoming the tools in the process.

Re: Another Clinton Delegate switches to Obama (2.00 / 1)

I am an Obama proponent.

I think this pledged delegate switching is completely sleazetastic.

I'm pretty happy that the Obama campaign is not recognizing these switcheroo pledged delegates in their delegate count. Pledged delegates should vote for whomever they are elected for. (And I would even go so far as to say that I think even Edwards should get to direct his pledged delegates to vote for whomever he so desires, and said so before the endorsement)

I actually agree.  I don't like pledged delegates switching either.

Re: Another Clinton Delegate switches to Obama (none / 0)

I don't like it either, although it is a bit of Scheidenfreude for the Hillary campaign, who blatantly stated that they would try to switch pledged delegates a couple months ago.

This isn't new.  Hart and Mondale were doing it to each other in 1984.  Kennedy tried to do it to Carter, but the rules at the time prevented it.

It's still not cool, either way!

While smiling at the karmic justice.... (none / 0)

....no pledged delegate should be switching allegiance.  It is a disenfranchisement of the voter.  Leave this stuff for the supers.

This rule should be changed asap.
